    Cool 4wd woes

My 85 k20 just recently developed a tendancy to pop out of 4hi and low when under a lot of load. i searched and searched for answers! i stretched the retainer spring and it stays in low now, but holding it in 4 hi with my throtle foot and no clutch shifting in the mud is kinda dicey!! i read about a detent something or other...cant recall at the moment... but any input from those with "education" as we call it with this particular follie will be gravely appreciated, and help me relieve the need of a fifth limb
