So I bought my 2500 Suburban with 173K on it.I have always used Mobil1 in all my vehicles but I wonder about switching with such high mileage.Any thoughts?

Well synthetic holds up to heat better and has more lubricity than dino oil. It also flows better cold. But if you have evn a slight oil leak anywhere, it will get worse with synthetic and synthetic oil can slip past piston rings easier and be burnt off in combustion, causing an increase in oil usage, thats why they say not to switch to it in high milage vehicles.

When I bought my 98 Suburban-5.7 1/2 ton 3 years ago with 195,000 miles I switched to Mobil 1-now 213,500 miles- no problem.

I switched a couple of vehicles with high mileage to Synthetic. The Amsoil didn't work out so well in the 97 K2500 w/150K. But the Napa house brand in the 96 Tahoe with 180K was no problem.

Ya even with the tiny benifits of synthetic, ive never used anything but regular Castrol GTX with Lucas Oil Stabilizer in my 'rado.

Well when it comes to tranny fluid, definitaly use synthetic ATF because synthetic holds up to heat and viscocity breakdown better than dino and the number one enemy to a tranny is heat. I also use synthetic oil in my front and rear differentials with no problem. The only place i dont use synthetic is my motor.

Could you elaborate a little? You say it "didn't work out so well"--what exactly happened?
