High Mileage oil change for 1994 GMC Suburban
Hello All,
I am confused after contacting several service departments both commercial and dealers and need some clarification or help. I own a GMC Suburban with high mileage over 160K and need to know the type of oil best suited for this to include the weight prefferably recommended. I really cant seem to narrow down the type oil to use, any recommendation?

My 1998 Suburban 5.7 1/2 ton -has 214,000 miles. I use Mobil 1 10w30 -I use the Extended performance or the High Mileage -doesn't seem to make any difference which I use. It gets me good mpg(no kidding 21 mpg hy at 65 mph) and I use less than 1 quart per 4000 miles in mainly city driving.Your motor probably calls for 5 w30-like mine- but I switched to 10w30 because my oil pressure is 20 psi at idle (once warm) and my guess is a new motor probably runs 35-40 psi at idle. My pressure is 40 psi at 60 mph(1700 rpms).

All of my TBIs have run either valvoline 10W30 or Mobil 1 high milage 10W30... I would run 10W30 of any brand of oil you are planning on running. That weight of oil makes for a good all season oil. I live here in MN were it is minus 40 in the winter and can get as hot as 100 above in the summer.

Thanks All!!, these are all good information. Now i am having to relocate to a more colder climate (snow). My vehicle has always been in Arizona, does it matter on the type of oil to include weight. Can anyone also advise what should i prep my vehicle prior to relocating.

Im going to move this to the Maintenance tech forum. Also where are you moving to? here in MN i run 10W30 year round unless i happen to do my oil change mid dec-to mid jan then i will run 5W30 if we are having a cold winter since -40 F can be a little hard on it. But otherwise 10W30 will be just fine.
