Default Almost Got Stranded At Work

This morning I drove into work, everything seemed normal. I pulled into my parking space, and turned the car off. I heard a pop, but didn't think too much about it. As I was walking away from my car, I smelled that unmistakable sweet smell of antifreeze. I turned around and looked at my car to see a growing puddle of antifreeze building up from my car. Turns out, the coolant recovery tank must have sprung a leak somewhere on the bottom of the tank. I was able to source the tank from the local Chevy dealership during the day. I then replaced the tank.

Installation went pretty well, though it did not go perfect. I had to break one of the mounting bosses off the old tank because it was wedged under part of the fuse box and I wasn't going to be able to get the tank out in a reasonable time. The hose on the bottom of the tank did not want to come off, nor did it want to go back on, but I got it.

Got the car home, so I'm happy. Here's to hoping the fix stays fixed...

Which car was it?? Im guessing the Ion.... At least you caught it before work. It would have sucked for it to leave you on the side of the road with a cooked motor.

And it's good that it happened when it did....and you should see what was leaking! Would have been a peach going out there to find your coolant gone and not know where it had emptied from.

Unfortunately, I think I'm at a point where I'm going to have to start fixing things in the car. It's got 153K on the clock with no real maintainence other than oil changes and no significant repairs. Things are bound to start breaking on me. With this being my commuter car, I can't really afford downtime on the car. Hopefully I can get a good many more miles out of the car.

As far as I have been able to tell, the 2.2L L61 Ecotech has a chain. I hope it has one.

Saturn issued a TSB on my car for the electric power steering, but the free repair is only valid up to 100,000 miles. I called the GM dealer about the TSB, and the repair out of pocket is somewhere in the $350-400 region. Not cheap by any definition, but certainly cheaper than the $600-1200 cost I was expecting. I have been experienceing the issue they outline, where you lose power steering while driving, and I've just been dealing with it. It's helping me improve my upper body strength while I drive.
