    Default valves - Suburban Valve Seals Question

    redoing an eng in an 86 burb doing valve seals now any suggestions on how i can clean them off of all the oil burned on them and carbon without damaging them was thinking wire brush but dont no if it will scratch them and if it matters

    The most important part is the valve seats and edges around the valves.
    If your talking just cleaning the faces of the valves you can use a wire brush, but it wont really matter if the valve faces are clean I doubt they could build up enough carbon and oil residue to affect the operation of the engine.
    To clean the valve seats you would want to use a hand valve lapping tool and abrasive valve lapping creme, this would ensure you keep a perfect seat on the valves and stop them from having seating problems during operations.

    the valve faces and stems can be cleaned with a wire brush, just be careful not to hit the seating surface. it's not a bad idea to replace the valves/springs/seals etc while you're doing it though, unless budget is a major concern. comp products sells a good "upgrade" kit for much less than you can buy the individual components.
