I had that problem on my 2000 Silverado, the voltage regulator in the alternator went bad, you can get the parts and rebuild it or get a whole alternator. If your lights are going dim it's not your stepper motor on your gauge. Usually if the alternator is going bad it will act up when they get hot. Eventually it will just quit.
Had the same problem on my 86 Vette.
Ford has a better idea! Drive a GM!

Ya....The reason I said take a look at the Stepper motor, was based off of Bigchris mentioning that the Parts Store said the whole system checked out to be...O.K.

.....what did the parts store check to said that the System checked out...OK??.....And if the lights are still going Dim.....I agree with you,it would not be the stepper motor.

The stepper motor is in the gauge, makes the needle move.

You can source handy little digital voltmeters to pop in the cig lighter. Might be very helpful to monitor this situation. But generally speaking, if the alternator flat out dies, you won't travel much longer than 30 minutes before you will drain the batter and the truck will die.

Have you had to jump start the truck lately?

That would be the guage on your dash, the stepper motor in that.

If you have a VoltMeter, I would check the voltage.
I also have a Black and Decker (I think it is) Battery Charger/Tester and Alt. Tester.

So I use both when I am checking voltage levels.

Do you get a Dummy light when it dips below 14V?

As someone mentioned earlier, I would check the grounds.....
Also check your wire loom. I had a similar issue with mine....and it turned out to be a wire in the loom....pulled it away from the Intake Manifold/Valve Cover and it corrected the issue.

Well I havent had a jump start and the gauge isnt really my concern but today when driving under acceleration I can hear a wierd noise coming from the engine bay, when I got home I opened the hood revved the engine and there was a sound coming from the alternator. So for the next few day the truck is gonna sit and ill ride the cbr to work and replace the alternator this weekend

Its part of the instrument cluster. I have recently had issues with the same parts.

Good idea about ridding the CBR. I miss mine. I would probably agree and replace the alternator

Yea I am for sure about changing the alternator this weekend because I have to use it on the 24 & 25 to haul the cbr to the track day! I dont want a failure then
