    Unhappy hard starting

i have a96 k1500 4-wheeled drive pick-up. it starts hard first thing in the morning or if it sits for along time. it normally starts with second spin of the motor but lately it takes at least a dozen times or more once warn up it will start on the second spin. it has a 5.0 motor with a automatic tranny, have no clue as what to do. once runing it runs fine, it did stall twice, but i pull over and it starts right up and runs great, been dealing with this for over a month.

You will need to check out the Fuel Pressure (there are a few threads that cover this here on the site) and you will want a minimum of 55PSI at the fuel rail, also is the Check engine light on??? if so you will want to get the codes pulled so you have an idea of the issues. Then go from there.

Hey Carl, have you ever done a fuel pressure "leak down" test to see how long it takes to lose the pressure? If your truck has this hard starting problem after 1 hour, or 3 hours etc. then leave the fuel pressure guage on it for that length of time & see what your ending fuel press. is. It sounds like once your press. is up it starts fine & on quick re-starts is ok, but you may be experiencing bleed down over longer periods of time.

Hi, i got the same problem before. Once the truck started, the pressure was normal psi, but when i stopped, hard to start again. Turned out that the fuel pump was about to give in. The mechanic just replaced the motor and strainer and not the whole fuel pump assembly. Now it starts it one click.

Could be the check valve.....try to "prime" the pump a few times. The the key on and off a few times before you start it and see if that improves your starting time. Also you have the proper weight oil in there since its getting cold right?

Could also be the coolant temp sensor. Sounds like you might be running lean, if you are stalling.
