There's also the fact that running your engine at lower RPM's for the rest of it's years just might save you a buck or 2 in the long run.
One of the best things I ever did was switch from a granny 4 speed to a 5 speed in my 1989 GMC 6.2 diesel C2500. It paid for itself more than once in the next 600,000 miles.

By the way I am wanting to swap the 3.73 differentials in my 1998 K2500 Suburban & 1995 Tahoe 6.5 TD's to 3.42's.
    And the 4.10 in my 1994 6.5 TD K3500 with 5 speed to a 3.73.
How fast on the HWY is your Burb with the 3:73's ??? and how does it pull ??? OH....and what overall diameter are your tires on that one ???

I'll have to check how fast it is/rpm's after I get it back from my daughter.
Depending on what you pull 3.73 is definately a good compromise gear.
It had plenty of pulling power for the 26' Aerolite we had.
I have been running LT265/75R16 load range E's on it ever since the OEM's wore out.

Well, i have 19'5s on it ( 225/70-19'5 ) or so and the Diesel will have around 400+ HP 17pounds of boost and stuff...LOL i love it ..but like i said, i dont want to go 65-70 only...maybe 85-90 max but still be able to pull way better then now !!!!!

I was able to cruise 65 mph towing the 26' camper.

Not to often, but on a straight, flat piece with no wind or traffic, I'd bump it up to 75mph, it cruised easily.

Default has a good calculator on there. you input your gears tire size and speed and it will tell you rpm's. i know i had 3:73 with a 35" tires and i had no low end torque. but i could run 70mph at only 1700rpms. im going to a 4:56 gears and now im looking at around 2100rpms at 70mpr. the nice thing about that web site is you can input all diffrent configurations to see what would work out best for you. i think 4:10 gears are best all around gear for every thing.
