Default push button 4x4 doesn't work

    2001 chevy 1500HD
4x4 worked fined when I bought it, now it doesn't work. I press the 4hi button, it blinks a few times and then stays solid, just like normal. Same with 4lo, but when I press that there is a whirring noise. Still doesn't engage. If I press 4auto, after a while the service 4x4 light comes on. Is this an acuator problem? How can I tell?
    thanks

gonna need to have it looked at by someone with a tech II so it will show where the problem is. its one of those things the basic scanner wont show. I had to have the actuator replaced on mine. I try to stay away from the stealership as much as possible but sometimes its necessary.
