Pure guess- not a PCV valve?
Where do those hoses come from?
Seems like they used to come from valve cover go to intake?

Lol Charlie, actually I don't recognize it unless it's an a.b. valve. I think the pcv valve is on the left rear corner of those engines, unless GM saw the error of their ways & relocated it.
Brian, I can see there's a part number on the side of it, write it down & call your dealer & ask what it is.

That looks like the EVAP purge valve/control solenoid, part of the emission system. Sorry don't know if its supposed to make noise when working.

Thanks all for the great replies. This is great information. After doing a ton of research today, it sounds like the EVAP Purge. I'm headed to the dealer on Wednesday for a bunch of other things. I'll have them look at it, however the darn think looks like I could buy the part and easily replace it, but I'm not sure if the tapping in it is normal. Oh well, ain't vehicle ownership fun????

    Hey All,

Dealership looked at the part, listened to the noise and advised it's normal. The tapping is loud though. We then got into a discussion about fuel and how it affects these specific parts of the motor. The dealership recommends running some 89 or 93 octane through the tank from time to time if you are a primary 87 guy. They advised in recent tests at the dealership, they are getting results that show supposed 87 octane sometimes as really 83 or even 80!!!! The funky gas makes some of the tapping happen and its starting to affect fuel systems in the vehicles. So, the oil companies stick it to us with $3.25 per gallon watered down 87 octane!!! Its a lovely world!!!

With the big 3 blaming the oil companies for all their woes, & us stuck in the middle, sometimes we don't know what to believe. Unless that dealer has done their own octane check on the fuel, then it's probably just more propaganda from GM. One thing to remember is, as octane goes up, fuel volatility & MPG goes down. Don't waste your money on higher octane fuel unless your engine is pinging, knocking, or detonating. You're just throwing $$ down a rathole if you do.
Go by the octane number that's in your owners manual. That's all your engine needs, unless you're doing severe duty such as towing heavy loads in mountainous terrain & you start hearing the death rattle.
