    Default Chevy Malibu steering problem

My wife has an '05. Great cars. Although something is wrong with the steering.... it bumps and makes a clunk type noise sometimes when first starting to turn... it just started it, so i havent looked at anything yet to see what the problem might be.

How many miles? The steering wheel makes that sound or it's part of the whole steering system?

about 46,000... the sound is coming from somewherere in the column or near the firewall maybe. It seems fine almost all the time, just once in a while it feels like there is something loose.

You didn't mention any play in the wheel. If you had noise and play in the wheel then it would sound like a busted steering box. Is there any vibration when going down the road? Also, does the steering lock work properly, where you set the wheel when parked?

I didnt mean like there was play at any given time... just when it makes the sound... and it is just like a bump, not really sloppy, just like it misses a gear once in a while. everything else works perfectly, no vibrations or anything.
