Default Front wheels don't seem to be locked in - in 4 wheel low

The 4 wheel drive works great in my 1994 Chevy z71 when its in 4 wheel high. When it is in 4 wheel low the gearing drops down but I am not sure that my front wheels are locked. When I turn at slow speeds the front tires seem to turn free and don't bind. They do bind when turning in 4 high. Do I have a problem and what is the likely cause.

While I'm not sure why the connection to 4L and not 4H, the first thing I'd check would be the center axle disconnect (CAD), because they frequently have problems. It might even be working correctly, but the thermoelectric design doesn't always work right (especially when it is cold).

To put the truck in 4 low I first come to a complete stop, shift the transmission on steering column into neutral, shift the floor shifter straight forward into 4 low, put the truck back in gear and start driving. I use the same procedure when shifting into 4 high other than pulling the floor shifter back. I have this same problem whether it is warm or cold outside. I have noticed that the truck shifts smooth into 4 high and when you go to 4 low there is a little grind sound but not bad. The 4 high most definately works considering I drove straight up my driveway today in the snow and didn't spin a tire. I tried to drive my Wife's RWD car up the driveway and it spun before the top even after selecting the snow mode for the transmission. I can research the CAD here online but I don't really know a lot about it.

I tried turning the truck off before shifting it into 4 low and it appears to work that way. Is this normal?

    I appreciate the humor..........

the manual doesn't mention turning the key off, it says to slow down. Maybe the truck is weird.... who knows!!
