is the check engine lite supossed to stay on until the code that is deteced is erased or will it turn it's self off and store the code

It will stay on until the problem is corrected. You can reset the computer by disconnecting the battery, but if the problem is still there, the light will come back on. You can get the codes read for free at Autozone and some other parts stores.

Disconnecting the battery will not clear codes for you and they will stay on until cleared with a scanner, or if the problem is not there anymore it takes 40 ignition cycles to clear it.
