    Default Engine Advice

So im putting a new Engine in the Truck this summer. I've got a 383 rebuilt line up from a re-builder in my city with about 320hp to the fly wheel. It is 3600$ not installed. I was originally thinking of just going for a 350 crate engine for around 2000-2500. but was talked out of this by the mechanic. he said they dont put the best parts in them and they tend to break down. This the Truth? or is he feeding me bull?? appreciate any advice.

if the crate motor is brand new i would stick with that one. you can always add mobs. the 383 is rebuilt. its a good motor but it just sounds fishy.

A crate motor is OEM, normally comes with warranty, is he willing to offer any warranty?
The parts in a crate motor, depending on which CI and HP rating your buying, are the same or better than an originally installed factory engine.
How many miles did your factory engine get before it needed rebuilding?
Does your mechanic have proof he's been building engines that can last that long?

Thanks so much for the help. yeah he offers 1 year 20,000km warranty. He has been around for 20 odd years and done a ton of cars in town here. has a good reputation. My engine has 140,000 km over its 26 year life, it really hasn't been driven much at all. but seals and cams are just starting to go because it has been sitting for so long before i got a hold of it. Its only a 305 so i am upgrading to either the 350 crate or his 383. But if what i hear is that the crate engine are great then that will be the rout i take to save the 1000$ Oh i am in Canada as well so things of course! will be more expensive. Thanks so much again!

I'd go with a GM crate motor if it was mine..
    1998 K1500 Ext. Cab 4.3 5spd
    Amsoil, CIA

    2007 Harley Davidson Vrod
    Amsoil, Vance & Hines 2into1, K&N Topless,
    Screamin Eagle Racetuner, StageII cams,
Carbon fiber front fender, and a few more lil goodies:wink:

I'd buy a built crate motor. You can get some good horse from those motors.

    2006 Duramax LBZ
    Edge Evo
4'' Diamond eye to 6'' tip
16'' ion alloy, 33'' fierce attitudes
Lots of work left to do!
