    Default 96 K1500 with 305. Starter won't engage.

I had my starter and flex plate replaced about 9 months ago. I still had a problem with the starter not engaging properly. I had read that the crank position sensor could cause the starter to engage hard and the truck was throwing a code for the sensor. I replaced the sensor last night. I forgot to hook the sensor up when I first tried to crank up the truck. After I hooked the sensor up, the starter doesn't want to engage the flex plate. I figure it could just be coincidence but just wanted to be sure.

Thanks for any help y'all can give me.

try taking the starter out hook it up to a battery just sitting on a bunch and see if it all works right. i think maybe autozone or some auto parts store will also test it for you.

Good news is the starter is fine. Bad news is that the crank seems to have too much end play. When I climbed underneath, I noticed that the starter was bullnosing against the flywheel. With 250000 on the motor, I'm looking to replace it. The question I have, is if I find a 350 short block, will the heads and accessories off of my 305 work on it?

You could try shiming the flexplate. Ive heard of people doing that before. 250k on the motor isn't bad at all. Its done its work. But you could always take the crank out and put new crank bearings in it. Theres one bearing in the middle of the crank that is to limit endplay and has probably worn out.
