    Broken cable,

    Disconnected cable, linkage,

    Trany is shot.

Pull dipstick and smell the fluid on the stick.

Also make sure it does have fluid in it.

If the fluid smells like burnt almonds it is trashed.

Thank goodness your not a doctor. You have no creeper side manner...

I was thinking of a way to break it to the poor man. I guess there is no other way to say it. But the forward gears won't be far behind if you keep driving it.

I remember a gentleman I knew was driving a ford astrovan, and the forward gears died on him when he was on the way home from the boy scout camp. so what did he do? Throw it in reverse and drive in reverse the entire way home! But seriously, follow feiro's advice.... it doesn't sound good for your tranny...

With low fluid, the first to go is reverse. Maybe it's just as simple as adding fluid. (Trying to look at the bright side.)
