    Cool Scottsdale information

Hi Members! I recently purchased a 1986 Chevy Scottsdale 4 x 4 and am in the process of restoring it.

Anyone out there have a 1986 Scottsdale? What problems have you had, and how did you solve them?

What about maintenance? How often do you change the oil and such? What is the most common problem with these trucks? What kind of tires do you recommend? Currently has 38-inch swampers, but I do a lot of driving on rugged mountain roads out here in Nevada. Any tire suggestions?

This is the first Scottsdale I have owned, so I'm in the dark. Any information would be appreciated.

I have an '88 Silverado so there's not much difference in the systems, only the bodies. There aren't many common problems with these. I change my engine oil & filter & grease it every 3,000 miles or 3 months. Change the trans fluid & gear oils every 30,000 miles. You should check & probably replace yours now because you don't know when the last owner did them. If you cruise the dusty trails of Nevada very often you should check your air filter after every trip. Change your brake fluid every 3 or 4 years (every 2 is what's recommended by those in the know) change your power steering fluid about every 5 years & you'll get more years out of the pump & st. box. As far as tires that's a matter of personal prefrence & the type of driving you do the most, so if you're happy with your swampers keep em.

**edit I don't know if you'll have this problem in a dry climate like Nevada, but in wet climates on muddy roads the Scottsdales sometimes have an issue with the lower front fender drains clogging up & the lower fender edges start rusting out. Slide a wire up in there & make sure they're cleaned out so the water can run through. Best way to test them is to run a garden hose down between the inner fender & see that it runs out good.

    Welcome aboard.
Youve got a great platform to work with for a project truck, parts are readily available, from 1973 to 1987 I think someone somewhere did everything you could do to a truck in one of those square body Chevy/GMC's.
Probably the only big issue is the corrosion one Stephan pointed out.
