    i think i solved the starter problem, i replaced it with a high tork gear drive starter. ther's a lot more space between the starter and the block, so far so good.

    Those 454's all produce a tremendous amount of heat. It's not at all unusual to find plug wires literally burned off of them. Your ideas about venting the hood will probably help some, but those rascals are just, plain hot!
