    Default 2001 GMC Yukon XL Blew Another Compressor

    The A/C compressor on our 2001 GMC is out again. The factory one ran for 10 years, no problem, always cold. Then out of the blue one day it blew out the compressor pressure switch on the back of the compressor. Replaced the switch, no luck, so I replaced the compressor and added switch (new compressor simply had a plug). Charged it up, ran great for a few days, then nothing but hot air again. Took it apart, and found the whole compressor seized up, switch blown out, and broken belt.

    I had good pressure, correct amount of oil, and everything, this is just driving me up the wall. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts as to what is going on, and especially if I can leave out that pressure sensor. My wife drives this 5 miles a day, no long trips.

    What brand of compressor did you use? and did you chance the Orifice tube when you replaced the compressor. It sounds like you may have just gotten a crummy one.


    1997 Chevy S-10 Blazer 4X4 with 330K miles and counting (Hunting rig).

    Welcome to the club RDL. If you're sure the oil level was correct, then it's X2 on what Murdog said, possibly just a bad compressor. There's really nothing that will blow them up, unless you're overdriving it with the wrong pulley, or no oil in it.

    I did replace the orifice tube, and the dryer. Its a Factory Air from Advance, and ma are they giving me crap about returning it. I know that the pressure switch is added safety, but in this case it seems to be more hassle than its worth.
