Your going to need to have the Computer Scan for the Trouble code or codes.....that are causing your SES light to go on and off.....Your local Parts House....Auto Zone O'Reilly's etc....do this service at no cost, make sure to get the what the Trouble code/codes are.

Edit:......From the 2004" Owners Manual when you have Flashing Light SES— A misfire condition has been detected. A misfire increases vehicle emissions and may damage the emission control system on your vehicle. Diagnosis and service may be required.

My 2004 5.3 has started doing this same thing. I found my gas cap is not sealing properly all the time. When it starts running a little rough. I undo and reseal the cap. It will still run a little rough for a short time afterwards and the light will go out after starting the truck a couple of times. I am picking up a new cap this week.

You will want to get the codes scanned that really is the only way to check. and with 9700 miles in that long of a time there is a good chance that some things are dry rotted, and or you have an injector problem from the fuel going bad etc.

I actually use one that was $70.. and it has done everything i have needed it to. Really you will just want one that can pull OBD2 codes, and most parts stores sell a cheaper version that will be more than what you will need.
