OK, this may end up being a stupid question, but I have no clue what tranny I have. According to the diagrams and such at LMCTruck.com, the TH700R4, 4L60, and 4L60E all have the same exterior characteristics when it comes to tranny oil pan shape and bolt configuration and the presence of an actuator, whatever that is. I want to start pricing and locating a towing/RV grade shift kit for it, and I don't know what tranny I have under me :( Is there any definitive way for me to tell what it is without dropping it and possibly bringing the tranny to a tranny shop? Thanks

You can check the RPO codes, it's a sticker on the door or in the glove compartment. If It’s an electrical tranny it's a 4L60E![]()

Cdaddy, Check out Driveline Plus for definitive info.
The 4L60E can be ID'd by the large electrical connector just behind the 2-4 servo.

Looking for a 1990's Miata for an engine swap
so far, the vibe I'm getting is that I most probably DONT have the TH700R tranny I was hoping I had. Or do I want a 4L60? I'm clueless when it comes to trannies... Thanks guys for your help so far. I will looks for the aformentioned signs on the truck when I get home.
EDIT: It turns out that I am an idiot. It looks like the 700R was renamed to the 4L60. So they are all 700Rs in essence, it just started getting electronically controlled.

Im still working on researching it. The serial stamped on the tranny is 1RAM208A. The Feature code found in the glove box that pertaines to the tranny is MD8 and MX0. OK, here's the fun part. According to Drivelines plus, the 4L60 line, be it E or not, has "TK" as the 2nd and 3rd characters of the serial. Additionally, when I look at the RPO code list that I think it was trailleadr supplied us, the code is not in the list. I found a M08 in the list, which is listed as "AUTO 4 SPD, AISIN, AW30-40LE, 2.804 1ST, 0.705 4TH", hoever, that is not the code. I doulbe and triple checked the code to make sure the D did not look like a 0. It does not. I just checked on all this info, so that's why I'm still researching it...

Upon further investigation, I think I lucked out... according to this site (http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/.../t-244727.html), I have a 700R4/4L60. Also, for further reference, this site (http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-rpo-codes/rpo-m.php) is pretty good for locating RPO codes on.

ok cause if not i was gonna say count the bolts and that will tell you if you have the 700R4

counting the bolts would tell me if it was a 700R or other tranny, however, it wouldn't tell me if it was an "E", since there is not difference between a 700R4/4L60 or a 4L60-E with the exception that there should be an electrical connector or two hanging around somewhere...
