what i do in the winter to help with traction is a couple of water softener salt bags, they usually run 60 lbs a piece and are in some fairly heavy plastic. never had one break on me yet, but that will depend on the brand. they are also cheap. the brand of salt i bought was like $15 a bag.
2x6 or 2x8 behind the wheel wells and u should be good.
