Default Silverado's with 8.1 liter engine

Never owned one, never even drove one, but was intirgued by the 8.1 Liter engine (gas) that was available for a short time in the 2500/3500.

My ideal dream truck would have been a 2500 4WD with a 5-speed (or 6-speed) manual and the big 8.1 gasser. I know, the diesel would have been better for hauling, but for thrilling drive the big gasser would be the most fun.

gas mileage be damned!! But since the 8.1 is history, and sadly the manual transmissions are history, I guess my dream is dead too.....

You can find an 8.1 silverado or sierra floating around every now and then. I've seen a handful of 'em on ebay motors and a few on Craigslist every now and then. Never drove one myself but I bet it has plenty of power.

    Newby here,

I have owned one (and STUPIDLY sold it for a diesel just before diesel fuel went $$$). The 8.1 motor was the BEST engine I have ever had. It got just about the same gas mileage as the 6.0L but the 8.1 had balls!
The big block combined with Allison transmission (mine was a 2002 with the 5 speed Ally) was a great combo. Towed a 25' travel trailer "like it wasn't there".

If you can find one and it is in good condition, jump on it- you won't regret it- take a test drive and you will agree.

    5.3 is a 327
    5.7 is a 350
    6.0 is a 366
    6.2 is a 378
    7.4 is a 454
    8.1 is a monsterous 496.

If you find 2 let me know! I did some work on them when i was in the army for the Special Forces guys. They had them in surburbans and even fully up armored (north of 14K pounds) they still hauled ass!
