The 305 doesn't get much respect for some reason, I have one in my Willy's/Jeep truck, 80 is "no problem", torque is excellent. Like your truck !

Well your right, the 305 isn't like the ill fated 307 of the sixties. Those small blocks had face hardened camshafts, which wiped out at about 50-60 thousand miles. My dad had a 1969 Chevelle with a 307, and for what's it's worth, they had plastic timing gears, which usually spin out on about the time the cam lobs dropped dead as well. But with the 305 it's different as the 305 has the original 265 V8 small pistons , and the crank and rods from the 350 V8. It gives you decent toque up to about 4000 RPM's but there isn't much after that. So that is why I installed a Airaid throttle spacer. It does give you a little bump from 800 to about 1600 rpms, and I also put on a K&N cold air intake as well as the shorty headers, and a Gibson 3" exhaust system. All told I am comfortable doing towing my max weight, but it's no Corvette. I know this well anger some, but I never saw any kind of an improvement in dropping a maxed out 383 in a truck. I buy a truck for work & dependability. I have a 2003 Corvette and she'll do 120 MPH in nothing flat, but there are tow examples of what a truck is and what a sports car is, and neither the twain shall pass. And thank you, I bought the 1990 I have off ebay, and in the last two years I've done just about everything to it. just finished up with a new set of cab / body mounts. You'd be surprised what new rubber feels like in a 22 year old truck !

I too have been bitten by the Chev/GMC bug. I really love the older 1949-1954 GMC trucks. Oddly the Chevrolet &GMC outsold the Ford till the 1950's when ford rolled out the F100. (If I'm not wrong) Oddly enough as well I bought a brand new 2004 F150, but within 9 months I knew I didn't like it, way to "boxy". So two years ago I had been on the hunt for a nice used 1500 Silverado, and I found one on the auction site and it was a real 'journey' to get it, but I did get it home and I started the restoration and it has turned out very well. Just about every major items have been replaced or rebuilt. And it has been a very satisfying experience. So I'd like to rebuild a 1953 GMC, but I think I'm not too healthy or strong to do a task like that again. I have a real broken back from an accident, which would hinder my ability.Click image for larger version.
