2001 Silverado 1500 ABS light on
Im going to look at a one owner 2001 silverado 1500 5.3 with 68,xxx miles and the owner said the only problem is the ABS light is on on the dash. should i be worried about this at all? is this a costly repair or something minor? i talked the guy down to a price of $11,500 but i wont pay that or even bother if this problem will just be a hassle. any input on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

It could be something as simple as a sensor unpluged or as expensive as a bad controller. I'd ask the seller if he'd allow the truck to be scanned. If he objects he may be hiding something. Run away as fast as you can.

Yup -- ask him if you can take it to a mechanic of your choosing (at your cost) and make sure you have the mechanic connect to the computer. Boonduff is spot on about how wide a variance in cost it could entail. Cross your fingers for a stupid sensor issue that's cheap/easy to fix.

Unless he has told you something different, that is probably the reason hes selling it. Hes smart enough to know its a problem so my guess hes already researched it and found hes wanting to get out of the truck and on to another rather than fix it.

I should mention, although I do not advocate this solution, I have known guys who disconnect the ABS module and be done with it.

Did he just happen to do a brake job recently? If so he might not have cracked the bleeders on the calipers, and forced the fluid into the ABS drive unit which could be thousands in damage depending on which module it is. Or like the guys said It could just be a speed sensor, which would be a few hundred.
