4.10 Gears

A good friend of mine just replaced the Gears on his 05 Dodge Ram (The Enemy)with bigger gears..from 3.73 to 4.56 ..i know my Silverado comes with 3.73 and that the SS has 4.10..what does bigger gears change,improve,do?

Gears will help with performance (off the line) towing, and mpg. For example 3.23 gears with 32" tires will give better mpg but less performance. 4.10 gears with 32" tires will give a little less mpg but get you off the line quicker. What there doing is allowing you to run at a higher rpm at a certain speed. For example 2000rpm at 60 or 2250 rpm at 60. I'm not to good at explaining these kinds of things but hopefully this will get you startd and someone else can chirp in.

no...that did it..would it be unwise to go with bigger gears than 4.10 for a 1500 Silverado with a 5.3L V8?

Gas mileage goes down, I have run 4:11/4:56 gears several times in the past. It is simple the engine is turning faster at all speeds, faster means more fuel to feed it. 4:11's will give you a much better low end great in the woods, but also consider gear contact surface. With the smaller pinion gear you have a weaker link in the drive train, I blew more 4:11 and 4:56 gears then anything else. Take my word I was not easy on any size they all got hammered. With gas being what it is you want to consider transmission gearing if you have stick, that way you won't jack up your gas bill on the road.

I'd go with 4.56 gears if I was running 35" or larger tires. But other than that no.
