    Default Tailgate Troubles...

I have a 2007 1500 Classic. I have always had to slam the tailgate pretty hard to get it to latch. Tonight it fell down on its own and wont latch at all. Has anyone had this trouble before? Any chance anyone has a exploded view of whats inside the tailgate that makes it work??

    Thanks!!

Jeff, here's a Diagram of the tailgate.......there are 2-Rods.....Number #2 in the diagram, going from the Tailgate Handle going out to the latches, maybe one of those Rods, has come loose and falling off from the handle, and that's just a guess??

My 06 done the same thing, I found it was rust between 2 plates at the handle. I was able to fix it by taking the handle out and lubricate and keep working it until it loosens up.

Yes, thank you! The passenger side of my tailgate has been sticking so I can't close it, have to use a screwdriver to set the lever thingy so I can close it. Was wondering how hard to fix it would be.

Took the handle apart and it appears to be stuck from corrosion. If your tailgate latch is working good it might be worth popping of the plastic cover and greasing the latch mechanism before it starts sticking!

Tailgate is finally back up and working. It was very easy fix once I got the new handle. Here is a link to the cheapest price I could find for the handle. It seems to be as good as OEM..

Make sure your rubber bumpers, part # 24? are there. I had one missing on my truck and the tailgate would not allways latch properly, causing it to fall open! Replacement bumpers are $13 so I made my own with a $1 rubber stop.

while you're in there, change out the two retainer clips that secure the rods to the latch. My 2000 gate quite working and the clips had dry rotted and broken. Chevy dealer had them in stock.... and that tells you there is a known issue with these.
