Sometimes when the system is flushed the shop will use the old prestone system rather than the new power flush systems.

OK. Here's the outcome. I did have a bad water pump. I took the radiator out and the replacement drain plug was also bad. It was slightly smaller than the original and would not stay seated. I took the radiator to a radiator shop and found a hair line crack in the tank so I replaced the radiator. I did have air trapped in the system which caused the fluctuation in temperature. It's all together now and all is well. Thank you all for the input.

Well that should be good for another 100,000 miles now. Glad to see you got it all repaired and back on the road
