How do I test a starter without removing it?
I think I am losing my battery, but want to make sure its not the starter. The starter is at least 10 years old and 130K miles since I haven't changed the starter myself. The truck is a 1995 with 240K miles.
If I take the starter off to test it I will replace it regardless, so I would just as soon test it onboard if possible.

the only way i know to test it is connect it directly to a battery and justtouch the wire too it, but if you did it while still on the truck it would then engage the flywheel. I have only bench tested them. Why do you suspect a battery?99 K1500 Suburban LT "THE BEAST"

Usually if the starter is bad it won't engage or it will intermittently. I would suspect the battery. You can get a battery load tested for free at most auto parts stores. EI.... NAPA, Advanced, AutoZone, Oreillys etc.............

I had a brain fart, if you take it to Sears Auto Care, Advanced Auto, Autozone or Oreillys they can do an electrical test while the battery is still in the car, this will also test your alternater. I agree with the previous though, if your startr was going it either is working or it isnt. Also you should check all the lines going from your battery, alternater and starter for and corrosion, as this acts like an energy parasite and will give you symptoms of a dying battery. If you do find it make sure it hasnt leeched up the wires inside the insulation as well.
