Thread: back up light

Yes. Use a relay and a fuse. Its cheap. Less than 10 bux for an off road light relay at the auto parts store.

just wondering what should i get it rated to because the lead is fed from the back up relay directly. that is from what i can tell from the truck wiring diagram.

I don't remember how the relays are rated - probably 10-15amps. The OEM relay and wiring for the backup lights are designed for the two factory lights in the taillights, which are what, 27w? Conversely, we all plug our trailers into the 4 flat or 7 round or whatever, adding those extra lights, and no additional relays are needed. The engineers may have already done the math for us.
You could tap into the 7 plug, and using a relay for the higher amp draw 55w light is a pretty good idea. (Good catch, moogvo)

couldnt for the life of me find the right type of relay but did find nice waterproof fuse holder for a 15 amp fuse. that should be fine in theory right if not id really love to know and also if it not right a nice steer in the right direction would be great like a link or something.

OK well installation went off with out a hitch and looks great. The hardest parts were drilling through the bumper and cleaning a part of the frame enought for a good ground.

Here's the location I had to wire in to the 4 flat in there and I had to find the back up lead that I had re taped in earlier this year.

Here is half way through right after Id drilled through the bumper which was a major pain also was a pain finding right washer combination to make sure the light wouldn't move or wobble. Was really annoyed of how short the lead from the light was.
