Default Glossing over powder coated nerf bars?

I've had a set of brand new nerf bars sitting in my living room, still in the box, for about a month or more now. I bought them because I'm trying to black my truck out, and I want to get rid of the chrome ones that came on the truck when I bought it. I haven't put them on yet because they're more matte black rather than glossy. I was giving some thought to getting a gloss clear coat that I could use to paint over the black and not only protect the running boards from rusting but also give them more of a gloss look. Does any one have any opinions on this as far as pros/cons go?

I was always told you can paint over powder coating. Just sand it down first. What if you primed and painted them gloss black?

I repaint my sliders everytime I take the truck off-road in the rocks, matter of fact I doubt theres any powdercoat left on the borrom side it's probably all paint by now, never had a problem with peeling if I scuff the surface first.

I have also been told painting over powder coat is no problem as long as sanded, our mechanic at my company days he does it on our machines alot.

Think it would look better with no running boards rather than black. I would get rid of mine but the family needs them.

I actually like the matte of the powder coat. I understand why you're looking at putting a gloss and clear coat on it, but I'd at least consider trying them out as they are first. You can always paint them later.

I've actually been considering this the past few days. My friends and family also say no to the black ones since they're not better than the oem ones. I don't like how the chrome sticks out so much and would prefer a different design anyway. I've been practicing not to use them at all to see how much I'd miss them. If I take them off I'll likely keep them in case I change my mind and it at this point it looks like the black ones are going up on Craig's list as NIB.
