is 150 bucks cheap for gears? I've seen sets for 250 bucks so why would these ones be so cheap?

What brand are they? I went from 3.23 to AAM 4.11's and couldnt be happier. AAM is the OEM gears used in chevy trucks. You want to get good solid ring and pinion setup and have them installed by someone who knows what they are doing. Last thing you want is metal flying around in your rear end.

What is the reason for only moving up to a 3.73 from what you have now?

You can get a set of AAM gears for around $225 - $300....money well spent IMHO. The $150.00 set is most likely a cheap set.

Avoid any gears that are stamped "Made In China", theres a lot of companies that source these cheap gears then package and sell as their own brand, I dont think you could find anyone thats had good luck with them, they all either crack after a few months or the surfaces flakes off and contaminates the lube oil with metal bits which takes out the bearings. Much of the problem with these gears has been traced back to heat treating and tempering, they arent being manufactured properly.
Probably one of the best gear vendors I've found is Randy's Ring and Pinion http://www.ringpinion.com/ they sell Yukon gears http://www.yukongear.com/ which have a great reputation. Yea you can find gears cheaper but you wont find the manufacturer standing as firmly behind their product as Randy's and Yukon Gears.
When you decide to replace parts like this it isnt time to be cheap, unless you want to foot he bill for repairs and installation of a new set of gears a few miles down the road.

You won't notice any difference with 3.73 if that's what you're looking for. Of your going to spend the money you might as well go with 4.11s and have no regret.
