Thread: 2.2 vs 2200

    Default 2.2 vs 2200

Ok so I am doing all this research and racking my brains and came up with this. The 96 and 97 S10 2.2 motors were called the "ecotech" and were and OHV motor. And the 98 and up 2.2 motors were known as the 2200 and part of the "VORTEC" family but were also an OHV motor with all the same specs except 2 more HP. I know the VORTEC is supposed to have some crazy F5 tornado vortex in the combustion chamber for better air/fuel mix. But what did Chevy DO to make it a "VORTEC" engine? What is the difference between a 1997 2.2 ecotech, and a 1998 2200 VORTEC? Aren't they the same? Can someone please shed some light on this subject? Im so confused

    2.2 and 2200 are the same. Its like a 4.3 ; 4300 or a 5.0 ; 5000 and a 5.3 ; 5300

If at first you don't succeed, chances are, you are using too small of a cheater bar

The heads are the only difference, and even that is negligible.

So do you think the older 97 2.2 have the same "vortex" design?

Probably. My '95 4.3 has vortec heads. It should be embossed on the valve cover. I think that by '96, pretty much everything had the Vortec heads and CPFI in place of the throttle body.
