GPS and Radar Detector covered by insurance?
My truck was broken into on the weekend and a bunch of stuff was stolen.
Including my Garmin GPS device and Escort Radar Detcetor which were mounted to the windsheild with suction cups.
My vehicle insurance and home insurance are under different insurance companies.
The Vehicle Insurance company does not want to cover these items as they are not "hard wired" into the vehicle and thus they feel are "personal items" and should be covered by my home insurance.
The Home Insurance company does not want to cover them either because they are "used in the vehicle" and thus they feel it is not a "home item".
Anyone else have experience with something like this?
Or suggestions what I should do or say to get the Home Insurance to cover the items?

Sorry to hear about this But this is where you have to read the Fine print.. Where was your truck parked? Was it home? Some Co's will cover it some won't go over everything on the Policy..

Whats your deductable? It might not be worth it in the end to claim them if you'll only get a few $$ back after the deductable and higher insurance rates.

Well, there is one thing I mount on my windshield.... but it does not stay in the truck when I am not with it. The Dash Cam and the local PD did not really like it when I was coming home from Walmart at 2am and went though their DUI check point with it recording. What they did not know is that there are ( or will be ) 8 other HD video camera's hidden on the truck anyway.

I'm sorry to learn of your expensive lesson. A few takeaways for you on this: it is best to have your home and vehicle policies with a single insurer to avoid this kind of finger-pointing ... and it's best to hard-wire everything into the vehicle in a concealed fashion so that not only do you not have things screaming 'steal me' ine the vehicle, but you also don't have concerns about your gadgets being 'personal items' as opposed to 'vehicular items'.

Yeah....live and learn. I also found out 1 of the deductibles would have been waved had they been bundled together.
This is the first insurance claim I have ever had to make.....and I won't be claiming anything it looks like b/c both deductibles are $500 and the total damages are $335 for the window and $500 for the lost items (not counting the $500 radar detector that neither will cover).
I will be bundling my insurance in the future.
I never saw those commercials because I don't watch TV!
Thanks for the tips guys....I will be doing as Surreal mentioned in the future and getting a Double DIN GPS / headunit.Last edited by UpsetProps; 08-28-2012 at 12:28 PM.
