    Default The great "radar detector debate"

    So we're all familiar with the debate that constantly floats around the web about who has the best radar detector and what factors determine which radar detector is considered your(the consumer's) book.


    With all the different types of radar detectors out there and with all the options it has, talking, and signal strength meters on them and the different mounting options as well as the looks of the detector. What really makes a radar detector the reason you use it in your vehicle and is that the reason that you always recommend it to other potential radar purchasers?

    The reason I ask is because lately I've been getting all kinds of questions about my radar detector because of where it's mounted and the fact that no one really notices it until it makes a noise due to a actual alert and not some false door alarm crap.

    I am currently a proud owner of a Valentine 1 and it literally determines just how fast I drive on interstates and open highways in my truck. The downside to owning a V1 is that there aren't any vendors or retailers around that you can take the radar to in order to get it serviced or warrantied, which makes it difficult to get things done in a timely manner. Also, these guys pretty much own all the important accessories which allows them to name the price on all of the accessories you might want for the radar, but at least you know it'll be quality equipment and it will work with the V1. Another downside is that they don't make their own rear mirror mount, so you have to try and shop around for a mount that is specifically made for your mirror. The one I have is made for a mirror with the auto dimming feature, which has a thicker stock to hold the mirror. I had to break off the dimming flip switch that the mirrors have in order for this mount to work. The reason I have this mount is because my last truck had the auto dimming sensor on it.

    On the upside, this thing has GREAT range and maybe even too sensitive because I can be a mile away from a LEO in my small town and it's already reading a strong signal, but I'm sure that's only because the officer could get my speed from that distance. I also really love the appearance of the radar, I like it's thin and wide look and it's very simplistic face. It only displays what you need to see and nothing more. No unnecessary buttons that could have be fused with one type of button that handles it all. Also probably the best feature is the fact that it tells you what direction the LEO is approaching from; front, rear, or the sides.

    So, what radar detector do you like? For what reasons and where do you have yours mounted?

    When I started driving a local bobtail as part of my job I gave up on radar detectors and started driving the legal speed limit, less hassles, less chance of loosing my job over a traffic ticket.
    I dont care how good your radar detector is theres always that one officer thats gonna get you by some fluke, seen it happen and while in the Military I was that officer a time or two.
    Plan your trip and if your running late anyone waiting for you will just have to wait, driving the speed limit is just much safer for you and everyone else on the road.

    I agree, driving the speed limit is the best way to avoid a ticket.

    Keep this on topic please, it's a radar vs other radar debate...not a safety debate.

    This also wasn't a thread created to know how to avoid a ticket, it's about which radar detector is the best one. I understand that they are instruments created to avoid tickets, but they are also used to know if you're coming up on a LEO. Even if I'm not speeding, I like knowing if there is a LEO ahead of me.

    Excuse me if your using a radar to avoid tickets then it becomes a safety debate, you share the road with others that dont feel like being run over by illegal speeding drivers!!

    No sir, YOU are sharing the road with people that want to get to places more quickly than the douche going under the speed limit. So, EXCUSE ME for trying to avoid the police that are out pulling people over that speed to get around the moron that doesn't feel it's necessary to pull to the side to let someone going a little faster get around.

    Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia and I'm in Virginia at least every other weekend and often every weekend. For that reason I don't bother with a radar detector, anymore, as it'd be a hassle to emplace and remove as I went into and out of Virginia.

    That said, even if they weren't illegal I'd not bother with one. Why? Because over the years I've owned various Cobras, Escorts, Passports, and even an in-dash Valentine One with external sensors and laser diffusers... and I've had a ticket or two with all of them. How is that possible? Pulse radar. Instant-on radar used around a curve or just over a hill. Instant-on laser used in the same way. And even good, old-fashioned eyeballing my speed and writing the ticket for 'exceeding a safe speed' rather than for a specific amount over the speed limit....

    Oh, and I got a ticket in Virginia with my supposedly-invisible V1. As it turns out, the cop was running VG-4 and the V1 was only VG-2-invisible. I don't know if they've rectified that with updates, but I sold the POS right after that. Thankfully running a radar detector in Virginia is a non-moving violation, so no insurance concerns because I wasn't speeding at the time ... but it was still a $96.00 hassle.

    Ouch, that sucks that they're illegal. I'm glad that they aren't illegal here in Texas, I don't see a reason for them to be illegal...just because someone has a radar detector doesn't mean they're going to go 100+ MPH down the interstate. I have noticed the instant on radars and it came as a surprise, but if I would have even been speeding in the area where that happened...I wouldn't be here today.

    I really only like to go over the limit and at max..80 MPH down the long highways that Texas has. I'm very happy that we no longer have the slower speeds at night, and I'm very excited that we're starting to see 75 MPH signs around as well.

    Excuse me Ridyn but here is a little math lesson for your driving over the speed limit really gets you there "more quickly"!

    Let's say that driving right at the speed limit, you can average 50mph on a 15 mile commute in to work. If you're in a rush, you go 10 over the limit. Hey, you get to work sooner, right? Well, do some simple math. At the speed limit, it'll take 18 minutes... at 10 over, it'll save you a whopping 3 minutes. That's right, you get to your desk a whole 180 seconds sooner. You'll burn much more fuel, though.

    Let's not even go with what happens when you hit traffic... the danger you're causing by whipping around everyone, and the FOOL you look like.

    So every time you pass a vehicle its because their going under the speed limit, not because your just speeding to get somewhere a little faster?
