    Default 98 Burb - Sharp snap in Left Front

    We have a 98 GMC Burb, 138K, 4WD. While driving slow on level ground, there was a sharp snap or crack in the left front. Sounded like something broke. Drove the 1 mile to home cautiously. Pulled in garage and there is brake odor. Pulled left front apart, expecting to find bad caliper etc. Found nothing. Put back together. It drives straight, smooth but can still hear something making occasional noise. Only thing different seemed to be the brakes grabbed after a few seconds on the snow rather than pulsating. Need some help in how to determine the problem?

    The recent symptoms might indicate something with the ABS system. Check the sensor etc.

    Discovered the problem after jacking up the whole car and putting it in drive. Both my wife and I would swear the noise came from the left front, but the actual problem was the left rear brake shoes. The linings on both shoes (non-riveted type) had totally separated from the shoes. The sharp snap must have been one of the linings getting caught and shattering.

    Glad to hear you found the problem on your own before it caused even more problems for you.

    Have you read my post in the coffee shop about how not to do brakes? At least you caught yours before it did as much damage as I did.

    This reminds me that I have to get my Burb over to my buddies, he has a lift in his garage. To do a complete under truck inspection of brakes, exhaust, cables, lines, joints and such.

    A lot of people are afraid to put these monsters on four jack stands and check noises like you had out.

    But then sometimes that is the only way to find a problem.
