I have an 04 Silverado and awhile back my check engine light came Also after driving for about 5 minutes I get a message saying "tighten fuel cap". I brought it in and the GM tech and he said that I have to get my fuel tank vent replaced for $610. Is this something that I should do? Am I getting gouged for $610? This seems like a lot to me. Thanks for looking!

My '04 did this a couple times when it was low on fuel, although I haven't had the problem recur in several months. The trouble code is actually for a large leak in the evap system. The most likely cause is a loose gas cap, but there are other, more expensive reasons for it. My advice would be to clear the code/check engine light, and if the CEL comes back then you'll probably need to get some type of professional repair.

Below is a Especially informative post,
