96 Tahoe with Vibration.

    So while driving my truck last night on the highway I noticed that at 40-45 and 70-75 the truck would shake violently from the front end but once it was no longer at those speeds or not accelerating at those speeds it would go away. I mainly felt it through the steering wheel and the floor. My tires haven't been balanced for a long time nor rotated because it isn't worth the money with old tires I plan to replace soon.

    Also in an unrelated statement my truck for some reason just was not down shifting when it needed to last night it just kept in 4th when I needed it to be in 3rd to get up a hill. Finally is it normal for the truck to up shift when you release the gas and get back on it?

    Surprised no one has any ideas. I will continue to update this tread with getting rid of the vibration.

    theres one of a green jeep........ if this is what you have, then your suspension is shot. virtually all of it.
    you need all new bushings, inkage, and shocks....
    how many miles are on the truck? does it have a lift?

    Hit 199,000 yesterday. She needs new shocks and tires, but the suspension bushings look in good shape even the ball joints are free from cracks and leaks. I really suspect my tires NEED to be balanced and my steering aligned because it hasn't been done for a long time, but there is no point to until I buy new tires later this spring. Also I need to do my tie rod ends they are warn. Parts are cheap but need the time.

    balance and alignment are #1
    Ive had the front end shake because of snow packed in the wheels.
    tire-rods and steering is next
    then wheel hubs and CV axles
    but once you get that shake, EVERYTHING shakes and the slop becomes worse.... and the geometry of the front end can change.
    did you lift it at all?

    No lift 100% factory suspension. CVs are in great shape as are the hubs.

    Also the vibration doesn't always happen at 40 only once and awhile. The truck mainly sees city miles right now so the vibration rarely gets a chance to happen. By May the truck will have new tires and shocks.

    on thats good.
    many times the geometry is ruined with a cheap lift.
    my truck is at 200,000 something... i hit a big pothole/whoop on the freeway coming home each time at at least 70mph. its fun. but this last time i got a wiggle, but it was arrested immediately...
    perfect balance and alignment are critical. i rotate them every 3,000 miles to make sure they wear even too. and i have yellow/blue bilsteins.

    one thing you could try... turn up your torsion keys a little bit, then go get it aligned. not enough to lift it 4" or something dumb like that, but just to stiffen the front up.
    i when i first bough my truck the front end felt like a wet sponge on winding roads... so i turned up the torsion keys, which lifted the front about 1.5/2" now i can take turns and hold the road much better with stiffer torsion load.

    im sure if you do that key tighten, the balance, alignment and and about $300 in GOOD charged shocks, you'll be ok for a while longer

    Tires will be BFGoodrich Terrains and I'm getting new Bilsteins because those are my factory shocks lol. Also I'm looking into Roadmaster Active Suspension like [MENTION=50075]SurrealOne[/MENTION] has to help get my rear back to factory height because currently it is sagging.

    i was just gonna get an add-a-leaf for mine... when i put the spare tire back there plus a full tank, and a rear full of gear, the truck sits more like a "pre-runner".... which i always thought looked kinda dumb lol

    Yah I hate seeing my truck squat it looks awkward as hell. Also after this summer my truck will become a mainly highway truck to travel to and from Wilkes Barre, PA to CT every once in awhile(once to twice a month). So I need to get any weird vibrations fixed as well as make sure I'm getting good MPG from what she has.

    Question you mentioned aluminum cooling diff covers in a thread about towing just a bit ago where can I find one because my factory cover looks junky and I want the rear to keep cool while moving 5600 lb of truck at highway speed. Soon all fluids will be synthetic and truck will get sea foamed this month, but I want to start getting small cooling mods done to protect parts from further wear.
