    This is what happen.
My wife was driving my 99 Suburban LT(4x4) going about 30mph, she says she heard a grinding, clinking noise then the car kind of halted and she just parked the truck. Now I turn on the truck and I can move the shift lever to any gear, but when I try to release the lever to engage the gear, I just hear grinding and the ger wont go in.

does anybody have any suggestions, Thanks.

does it mean that it has to be rebuilt, or are there test that I could do to see if it can be fixed?

You could have a transfer case problem. Try 4X4 low and see if it moves. If not then you probably need a transmission.
