I've got an '01 K2500 suburban with the 8.1L engine. When going from drive to 3rd (either driving or stopped) I hear a pretty bad grinding type noise... metal on metal?? If I quickly shift into 1st there is no noise. If I then go into 2nd, then 3rd there's no noise. At that point, I go from 3rd to drive and there's a small click sound.

I've uploaded a recording of the noises. The loud noise is pretty evident. The "click" going from 3rd to drive is harder to hear.

    Thoughts? Doesn't sound good.
