This is for my moms 2004 Trailblazer

So the problem being ever once in a while, on a long trip or something, will just be driving along at normal highway speeds of 65 to 80 mph and the speedomiter will just start rising and rising till its gone all the way around and is pointing straight down way past 120 mph mark towards the info center and will stay that way even after stopping and shutting off the car and the only way to get it back to normal is to turn the car on and off

also when turning the car on all the gauges shoot up a bit and then settle back down but while this is happening there is a sort of grinding sound which may be part of the problem

I would like to know whats causing this and if there is a fix the dealer can do or if the whole gauge cluster needs to be replaced.

not sure if this will help you but i was lookin thru ebay and they had small nylon gear kits for the speedo's for this app. never repaired one so i may be wrong but you can start there. or maybe get a used gauge cluster from the junk yard and replace the old one.
