I'm familiar with programmers, but what is actually involved in a custom tune? I really know nothing about it.

What hardware do you get when you order a custom tune?
What kind of performance gains can you expect assuming you have the basic bolt-ons already installed?
What happens if you want to go back to stock for some reason?
What happens if the computer is reset for some reason, can you reinstall the custom tune?
Will it increase or decrease the gas mileage, assuming you keep the same driving habits?

Depends on the tuner and what you request. Most give you the option of sending in your PCM, they tune it, and send it back. Or you pay extra (recommended) and they just send you another PCM, already tuned.

A custom tune really is custom - there is no "one size fits all." Performance varies significantly due to the fact that engine vehicle AND tune is always different. With a custom tune, you get the performance tune that you request. If you want an economy tune, you won't have so much HP. If you want a Max Performance tune, then you get a lot more power.

What happens if you want to go back to stock for some reason?
If you plan on going back to stock, I'd suggest ordering the extra PCM and keeping your stocker.

What happens if the computer is reset for some reason, can you reinstall the custom tune?
If the PCM simply loses power, nothing is lost. If the dealer reflashes your PCM, then it must be sent back to the tuner to have it reflashed. Some will charge a fee, others will not. Another reason it's suggested to keep the stock PCM.

Will it increase or decrease the gas mileage, assuming you keep the same driving habits?
Just in general, you may see an increase in MPG, possible 1-2 MPG. But once again, this vary depending on the type of tune you request, your vehicle, how you drive, etc. Keep in mind that if you want to USE the extra HP/TQ you get from the custom tune, I can promise you won't see any increase in MPG. :)

Any more questions? Search the forum or go here for a list of popular custom tunes. You can visit the site for a lot more information or even just give them a call. Once you see all of the various options you have for a custom tune, you'll see why there will never be a black & white answer for a lot of this stuff. Good luck!
