Floor Mount Bracket

I just purchased a floor mount bracket to hold a siren controller and light switch box for use with my personal vehicle -- I'm an EMS first responder... The bracket fits nicely over the transmission hump and I'm fairly sure I can simply go through the carpet into the metal underneath with some medium self-tapping screws.

But, before I jump into it, I just want to see if anyone has tackled such a project before? Anything to be careful of, to watch out for? Is there any way to protect the carpet from the drilling so that if I ever remove the mount, I won't have large holes in the carpet?

    Thanks for the help!
