Grinder into third

Hi all, first question for the truck club.
So when I shift into third, it's like doing it without the clutch. Meaning at the right speed (15-20 up shifting and 25-30 down shifting) it slips right in to gear. Outside of that range it grinds. It was a known problem from the seller and he said it was the syncro mesh gone bad. Is that fixable with out rebuilding the whole tranny? Or should I just rebuild all of it since I'll be in there?
It's a 5 speed 1 ton diesel transmission. That's vague, but it's all I know so far. I'll look for some numbers or clues when I get home.
Any ideas in the mean time?

    Thanks in advance!
