Welcome to the site! There are some real good "gear heads" on the site, so I'm sure you'll get some help before long.

Ok so you have an 8.1 V8, what are the symptoms? Why is the mechanic saying to replace valve seals?

Get the compression checked and have a leak down test done.
This should tell you if you have a valve issue.
The repair manual for your truck should give compression numbers and leak down times.
