I have a '97 Silverado 4wd with a 10 bolt rear in it. There is a loud humming noise coming from the rear. I drained and refilled with Mobil 1, hoping maybe my oil had seen better days. No help. Anyone have any ideas on waht might be the problem??

    Thanks

Could be wheel bearings ..did you see any metal in fluid.

Very, very fine, but nothing that I thought was alarming. Any way to check without pulling the axles??

That sounds like a bearing or (sinds you have some metal in the fluid) the differential.

How do your u joints look? A good rear end shop should test drive it and diagnose it for free. I don't do diffs so if I ever hear something I just take it to the guy up the street. He never has an issue checking it out. Last time I thought it was and axle shaft bearing, I went in. He drove it, brought it back jacked it up and attempted to move the rear wheels up and down, left and right. Said all was good and sent me on my way

Sounds like the rear end gears/bearings are worn out....how many miles?
