No 3rd gear in '84 Jimmy

    Hey all...

New to this forum but have had great success with other types of forums for my Nissan.
My question: 1984 Sierra Classic Jimmy 350 won't shift into 3rd or above. New to this truck or even type and age. I knew I had a leak, and kept an eye on it. Once it started to fail to shift, I checked fluid in idle and hot, well crap it's barely on the dipstick. So, I added and still hasn't fixed the issue.

I've had 2 different opinions of amateur status. One is the filter just needs to be changed and fluid flushed. And two, clutch is going out. I'd rather it be number one.

Happens in both 2WD and 4WD. I see no metal shavings on dipstick.

    Any opinions?

Also! When I mean doesn't go into 3rd, it's just like neutral. No gear at all I can throw into 2nd and it will drive, just won't go above that. Once I go slow enough, it will reengage. i.e.neighborhoods.

    Thanks

    I'm the dipstick now.

well given the age of the truck im going to assume you need a tranny rebuild, being that it has no "3rd" gear thats what i would do. look at a reputable tranny shop if you take the tranny out and intall the new one it will save you a good chuck of change.

Or you could buy a prebuilt tranny from a shop. I bought one from http://www.monstertrans.com/store/ for my 85 K5 have have not looked back.
