Rear Diff

    I want a LS rear with 3.42, but don't want to pay the $500 to geta new one as well as re-building my rear axle to go along with it.... I would like some type of an auto locking, but not the one Chevy offers.... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

    "lunchbox" locker, maybe? A lunchbox locker replaces the spider gears in your existing carrier. They can usually be installed without going through setting up the gears, so they are "easy" to install. Brand names include powertrax no slip or lockright and Detroit EZ locker.

    A "lunchbox locker" is an aftermarket locker. It is usually designed for use in an open/conventional carrier, where it replaces the "spider" gears with a locking mechanism. Powertrax lockright and the Detroit EZ locker are examples.

    Just wanted to let you know of one downside to using a lunchbox locker or any true locking diff. Your profile doesn't say in what part of the country you live in, but if you live in a section that ices up in the winter this applies to you. A auto locking diff (which a lunch box locker is) works by locking when you step on the gas and unlocking when you let off the pedal. This locking and unlocking can cause some weird handling issues on slick roads . They've been known to cause spinouts throwing the vehicle into a 360, and on slick curved roads they can push you to the inside of the curve and into the ditch. Some people accept the bad handling and figure out how to drive the vehicle safely, but the vehicle is now something you wouldn't want to let your wife or girlfriend just jump in and drive.
