Removing axle shaft

I'm in the process of replacing passenger side axle seal and bearing on my '97 Chevy Silverado 4x4. Have the axle and tube assembly out of truck and on the bench. Chilton's manual says there is a snap ring holding gear on. I do not see any kind of snap ring or other locking device. Gear moves up and down on the shaft about 1/16". Can see the spacer and thrust ring under the gear, just nothing locking it on. What am I missing that is holding this gear on? and even bigger question, what do I need to do to remove it so I can remove the axle from the tube to access the bearing and seal on the outer end? Pictures are available if anyone needs them. All help would greatly appreciated.
