Okay i have 108,000 on my truck and I'm thinking of switching to synthetic oil in my motor. Any ideas if this is a good or bad idea? Someone told me that it's not good because i could start burning oil...is this true?

My 2007 was switched to mobile 1 synthetic at 40k now with 70k it will burn 2-3 quarts in 3k mile. Took it to the dealer and they changed the oil put their non synthetic oil in it and was a half of a quart low at 3k miles. So who knows my 2004 had Mobile 1 syn its whole life and never burnt a drop.

Most advise against it. Some oil companies have a special oil for those over 75,000 miles. I believe it to be semi synthetic but it seems to give a bit more MOG and no oil burn on a 2000 Cadilac Deville

It is not advised to switch. If you used synthetic from the start you should use it throughout the life of the engine. The same goes for conventional oil. Switching can cause abnormal wearing on surfaces such as bearings and piston rings. Also if you have a small leak anywhere, the use of synthetic will leak alot worse.

Sounds like it's really not a good idea. I've always heard that is wasn't wise to switch but wasn't sure if it was just personal opinions.

I also advise against it. I had a 86 Camaro a few years back with the 305. O'Reiley happened to be out of straight 30 weight oil, so I put some 10W-30 in for that ONE oil change. I burned 2 quarts out the first 500 miles. Changed back to straight, or regular, 30 weight oil, no issues. Both oils were Castrol brand. HD30 on the one, and GTX 10W-30 on the other.

Yeah my main goal was to have longevity of the motor that's why I was thinking of changing to synthetic. Wish i could have bought the truck new so it would've had it to begin with. I'm not really want to risk the chance of messing up my motor for a little fuel mileage.

What was the ambient temperature. As both of these oils are conventional and neither are synthetic if I recall correctly.
